BDSM

BD is a compound acronym derived from the terms bondage and discipline next letters follow by the D.
DS (Dominance and Submission) next letter is S

BDSM encompasses many activities, including — but are not limited to — forms of dominance, submission, discipline, punishment, bondage, sexual roleplaying, sexual fetishism.

Activities and relationships within a BDSM context are characterized by the fact that the participants usually take on complementary, but unequal, roles. Typically, participants who are active — applying the activity or exercising control over others — are known as tops or Dominants. Those participants who are recipients of the activities, or who are controlled by their partners, are typically known as bottoms or submissives. Individuals who move between top/dominant roles and bottom/submissive roles—either periodically within a relationship, or from relationship to relationship—are known as S/switches which means either top or bottom.

The term "Bondage" describes the practice of restraining for pleasure. Bondage is usually, but not always, a sexual practice

AG Lesbian

AG abbreviation of (Aggressive)

In 2005, filmmaker Daniel Peddle chronicled the lives of AGs in his documentary The Aggressives, following six women who went to lengths like binding their breasts to pass as men. But Peddle says that today, very young lesbians of color in New York are creating a new, insular scene that's largely cut off from the rest of the gay and lesbian community. "A lot of it has to do with this kind of pressure to articulate and express your masculinity within the confines of the hip-hop paradigm.

Butch-Femme Relationship

In the 1940s in the U.S., most butch women had to wear conventionally feminine dress in order to hold down jobs, donning their starched shirts and ties only on weekends to go to bars or parties. The 1950s saw the rise of a new generation of butches who refused to live double lives and wore butch attire full-time, or as close to full-time as possible. This usually limited them to a few jobs, such as factory work and cab driving, that had no dress codes for women. Their increased visibility, combined with the anti-queer rhetoric of the McCarthy era, led to an increase in violent attacks on gay and bisexual women, while at the same time the increasingly strong and defiant bar culture became more willing to respond with force. Although femmes also fought back, it became primarily the role of butches to defend against attacks and hold the bars as queer women's space. Ying and Yang

While in the '40s, the prevailing butch image was severe but gentle, it became increasingly tough and aggressive as violent confrontation became a fact of life. In the 1950s, reported that women held strong opinions, that "role distinctions needed to be sharply drawn," and that not being one or the other earned strong disapproval from both groups.

Starting in the 1970s, some feminist theorists pronounced "butch-femme" roles politically incorrect because they believed that all butch/femme dynamics by necessity imitated hetero-sexist gender roles, leading to butch-femme relationships being driven underground.

However, "inherent to butch-femme relationships was the presumption that the butch is the physically active partner and the leader in lovemaking....Yet unlike the dynamics of many heterosexual relationships, the butch's foremost objective was to give sexual pleasure to a femme. The essence of this emotional/sexual dynamic is captured by the ideal of the "stone butch.

Gay Games VII

The four acts represent the four stages of this evolutionary process as envisioned by the Director: Exclusion - that moment when we discover that we may not fit into the world as we might have thought, growing up...the moment of discovery of difference; Oppression - the manifestation and formalization of the dynamic initiated in Exclusion...homophobia, gay bashing, contemplation and execution of suicide out of despair...ending with the embracing of self and the beginnings of hope; Expression - the power of community and standing up for oneself, of coming out of the closet, finding Like Others, celebration of individuality and difference within even our own communities; Ignition - the taking of all this powerful energy and philosophy and lighting the world with the ideals of enlightenment and acceptance.

Winifred Emms

best known by her stage name Hetty King, was an English entertainer who played in the music halls over a period of 70 years.

Emms was born in Shoreditch, London on April 4, 1883.

Emms adopted the name Hetty King when she first appeared on the stage of the Shoreditch Theatre, at the age of six with her father, William Emms (1856-1954), a comedian who used the stage name of Will King. By 1905, she was appearing in music halls, with her solo act, as a male impersonator, often dressed as a "swell". Her career spanned both World Wars when she performed in the uniform of either a soldier or a sailor. She also played the "principal boy" in many pantomimes.

Breast Binding

Hiding one's breasts is likely the most challenging piece of the gender illusion puzzle for a drag king. While some are small breasted and may succeed using a tight sports bra, many kings resort to one of the following, or several of the following used in conjunction with other methods: Ace bandages (which is incredibly risky due to the bandage's nature of tightening with movement, restricting breathing); duct tape (dangerous for the same reason as Ace bandages, restricting breathing); soft, hard, or ribbed back braces (worn backwards); and compression shirts and vests. Some use a method involving cutting a hole in the crotch of pantyhose for the head and making sleeves out the legs.

This creates a tight stocking shirt that compresses the breasts. While it is uncomfortable to bind one's breasts in any way for any period of time, duct tape is the most damaging. Prolonged use has resulted, in some cases, of tearing off skin and excessive blistering after removal, or stretching of the breast tissue and skin after long term use. Another damaging binding technique, but more immediately so, is the use of Saran wrap. Saran wrap will close off the pores, not allowing the body to sweat or breathe.
Kings have been known to pass out, or faint, within minutes of performing due to binding with saran wrap.

Don't Ask, Don't Tell

The don't ask, don't tell policy, signed in 1993 by former president Bill Clinton, was implemented as a compromise with legislature which opposed a complete repeal of the prior ban on gays in the military. The death of Seaman Allen Schindler in 1992 brought the issue of gay servicemembers to the forefront. Established under the premise of privacy, discretion and protection, the policy bans gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender people from serving in the military and prevents military officials from asking probing questions or pursuing investigations of soldiers suspected of being homosexuals. Any servicemember that openly reveals their homosexuality through words or actions are discharged from service.

Proposition 8

Proposition 8 (officially called the Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry Act) was an initiative on the November 2008 California voter ballot which altered the California Constitution by defining marriage as between one man and one woman. The original title of the measure was "California Marriage Protection Act," but it was changed to "Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry Act" by Attorney General Jerry Brown to accurately reflect what the true meaning of the measure.

On May 15, 2008, in a 4-3 decision, California's Supreme Court ruled in favor of plaintiffs (comprised of gay rights group Equality California, almost two dozen gay couples, and the city of San Francisco), who argued that the 2000 law banning same-sex marriage in the state was discriminatory. The decision made California the second U.S. state to legalize gay marriage. Thousands of same-sex couples flocked to the alters. The ruling prompted an anti-gay marriage campaign, which resulted in Proposition 8's placement on the November 2008 voter ballot.

Voguing

A dance form popular in the 1970s and 80s. Voguing often imitated the perfect lines and flexibility of model poses seen in fashion magazine such as Vogue.

No touching was allowed during vogue challenges, even though dancers would often become intertwined in each others extended arms, legs and hand moves. The voguer with the best dance moves was declared the winner of the battle.

Voguing later evolved into popular fundraising shows and individual dance styles. Today, most houses use a type of dance called the j. sette to challenge each other.Choreographer, dance and runway teacher Willi Ninja was considered one of the best voguers of all time.

Balls can also be an opportunity for gay house members to gather or compete against other houses. To learn more about balls or to get a glimpse of the action, see the documentary Paris Is Burning.
